Mannúðarástand í Úkraínu er mjög alvarlegt, þegar er orðinn mikill skortur á matvælum víða í landinu og vopnuð átök hindra bæði að almennir borgarar geti flúið á örugga staði sem og birgðaflutninga víða. Rauði krossinn gerir sitt besta til að greiða fyrir öruggum flutningi fólks þaðan og koma þangað vistum.

„Hugur okkar er hjá þeim sem þjást vegna átakanna,” segir Árni Oddur Þórðarson, forstjóri Marel. „Með framlagi okkar viljum við styðja mikilvægt starf Alþjóðaráðs Rauða krossins við að veita mannúðaraðstoð á svæðinu, þar á meðal fæðu, vatn og öruggt skjól, auk þess sem samtökin leggja áherslu á að viðhalda grunninnviðum.”

„Við erum Marel ótrúlega þakklát fyrir þeirra mikilvæga framlag til að mæta þörfum íbúa í Úkraínu. Það er gríðarlega mikið og erfitt starf framundan þegar kemur að því að mæta þörfum þolenda en við leggjum allt kapp á að ná til sem flestra,“ segir Kristín S. Hjálmtýsdóttir framkvæmdastjóri Rauða krossins á Íslandi. „Framlag Marel og annarra sem leggja okkur lið gera okkur kleift að ná til enn fleiri og það skiptir máli. Það skiptir fólkið sem fær aðstoðina öllu máli og fyrir það erum við Marel þakklát."

Marel donates to International Red Cross humanitarian aid efforts in Ukraine

Marel has decided to donate EUR 250.000 to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) who are working on the ground in Ukraine to provide urgent assistance to all those affected by the conflict.

Working with the staff and over six thousand volunteers of the Ukrainian Red Cross Society (URCS), the ICRC is scaling up the response by the hour to help all those in desperate need of food, safe water, medical assistance and shelter materials.

The humanitarian situation in Ukraine is increasingly dire and desperate. In the coming weeks, the ICRC will increase their work to reunite separated families, provide food and other household items to the internally displaced, increase awareness about areas contaminated by unexploded ordnance, and carry out our work to ensure that human remains are treated with dignity. 

Water trucking and other emergency water delivery is needed, and support to health facilities will be increased, with a focus on providing supplies and equipment to care for people wounded by weapons.  

“Our thoughts are with the people suffering because of the armed conflict in Ukraine,” says Arni Oddur Thordarson, CEO of Marel. “With our donation to ICRC, we want to support the humanitarian aid provided by the Red Cross teams in the area, which includes food, water and shelter, as well as the maintenance of basic infrastructure.”
