Icelandic Red Cross
The Icelandic Red Cross was founded on December 10th in 1924.
Steingrímur Matthíasson, doctor and Þorbjörg Ásmundsdóttir wanted to develop and strengthen the medical and nursing field in Iceland so they sought inspiration to the Danish Red Cross. Sveinn Björnsson the first president of Iceland was also the first chairmain of the Icelandic Red Cross. Ever since, the organization has been a leading force in healthcare, social care and humanitarian aid in Iceland. The Icelandic Red Cross is also an auxiliary to the Icelandic government, f.ex. in the field of disaster and emergency services and refugee services.
